The screams were coming from the second floor of the mansion.
At the back door,  Valentina<\/strong>  stopped, alarmed, upon hearing the desperate cries of a little girl.
A few seconds later, an angry voice rang out again:

\u201c  Nobody can stand you anymore! Stay there crying until you learn!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A door slammed shut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c  Oh, what a situation\u2026\u201d<\/strong>  murmured  Carmen<\/strong> , the oldest employee, as she greeted Valentina.
\u201c  The lady is furious again.\u201d<\/strong>
\u201c  Which lady?\u201d<\/strong>  asked Valentina, confused.
\u201c  Do\u00f1a Fabiana. The girl\u2019s stepmother.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crying still echoed throughout the house.
\u2014  \u201cAnd the father?\u201d<\/strong>  Valentina asked.
Carmen sighed.
\u2014  \u201cTraveling. Always traveling. This house is like this\u2026 and I’m telling you, dear, this job isn’t easy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Valentina didn’t hesitate for a second.
She dropped the bag on the floor and  ran upstairs<\/strong> , following the sound of crying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the hallway, a blonde, elegant, and haughty woman  emerged from a room<\/strong> , slamming the door behind her.
Her expensive perfume contrasted sharply with the tense atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c  You must be the new employee,\u201d <\/strong>Fabiana<\/strong>  said  , forcing a smile as she adjusted her hair.
\u201c  That\u2019s great, because I have to go out. The little girl is having a tantrum. You can start cleaning when she calms down.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014  \u201cIs the girl alright?\u201d<\/strong>  Valentina asked, worried.
\u2014  \u201cYes, of course. She\u2019s just making a scene, as usual.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fabiana hurried downstairs, grabbed her bag, and left through the front door.
Silence returned\u2026 broken only by the sobs that continued to come from the end of the hallway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valentina approached and gently knocked on the door.
\u2014  \u201cHello, little one\u2026 may I come in?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crying subsided a little.
\u2014  \u201cI won\u2019t get angry, I promise,\u201d<\/strong>  she said in a sweet voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She opened the door slowly.
On the floor,  a little girl with brown hair<\/strong>  sat, hugging her legs.
Her face was covered in tears and her eyes were swollen from crying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014  \u201cHello, sweetie\u2026 what\u2019s your name?\u201d<\/strong>
The little girl hesitated for a moment.
\u2014  \u201cMelissa.\u201d<\/strong>
\u2014  \u201cMelissa\u2026 what a pretty name. I\u2019m Tina. Why were you crying?\u201d<\/strong>
Melissa pointed to her stomach.
\u2014  \u201cIt hurts\u2026\u201d<\/strong>
\u2014  \u201cAre you hungry?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The little girl nodded silently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valentina looked around: the room was empty, without toys, without food, without joy.
She went to the kitchen, prepared a glass of milk, and took some cookies.
When she returned, Melissa was eating slowly, timidly, as if afraid of being punished for it.
Valentina sat beside her and stroked her hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014  \u201cCalm down, my love\u2026 you\u2019re alright now.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly,  the front door burst open<\/strong> .
A tall man in a dark suit, with a tired look in his eyes, appeared.
It was the father. The millionaire.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014  \u201cWhat\u2019s going on here?\u201d <\/strong>Leonardo<\/strong>  asked  , surprised to see the new employee in his daughter\u2019s room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before Valentina could answer,  Melissa ran and hid behind her<\/strong> , clinging to her skirt.
The man remained motionless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014  \u201cMelissa?\u201d<\/strong>  he murmured, his voice trembling.
The girl was trembling, refusing to come out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valentina looked at him firmly.
\u2014  \u201cI found her alone, crying, hungry. I don\u2019t know what your wife does when you\u2019re not around, but\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leonardo paled.
\u201c  Fabiana told me she was fine.\u201d<\/strong>
\u201c  Well, she isn\u2019t,\u201d<\/strong>  Valentina replied calmly.
\u201c  And I think she hasn\u2019t been for a long time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man knelt before his daughter.
\u2014  \u201cMy love\u2026 is it true?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Melissa burst into tears and hugged his neck.
And in that embrace,  all the truth he had tried to ignore came to light.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Days later,  Fabiana was expelled from the mansion<\/strong> after what she was doing to the girl was discovered.
Valentina, on the other hand, stayed.
Not only as an employee, but as  a protector<\/strong> , and over time,  as part of the family<\/strong> .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
