I work at a chemical manufacturing plant. The factory stands almost at the edge of the forest \u2014 from the gate to the river it\u2019s only about a ten-minute walk. Often after my shift, I take the path home that runs along the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That evening was overcast, and a light mist hung over the water. I was about to turn toward the bridge when I noticed something strange near the riverbank \u2014 a lump of mud, grass, and fur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, I thought it was just trash, but suddenly the lump moved. I came closer\u2026 and saw that it was breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fur was too dense, too coarse \u2014 not like a dog\u2019s. The ears were pointed and slightly too long. And the paws\u2026 large, with powerful claws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I froze. The little creature lifted its gaze \u2014 amber eyes glowing faintly in the dim bathroom light. And it gave a quiet growl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My heart dropped. This was no puppy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I carefully wrapped it in a towel and called a veterinarian I knew, telling him I\u2019d found \u201ca wounded dog near the forest.\u201d He agreed to see us right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
